Cuyo, The Self-Taught Tattoo Artist Who Inspires

Cuyo is a remarkable self-taught tattoo artist from Jakarta, born on February 22nd, whose journey in the tattoo world is driven by passion, creativity, and perseverance. Without formal art education, he began exploring tattoo art through his long-standing drawing skills and encouragement from friends, especially influenced by his experiences in the Vespa community. Starting his tattoo career seriously in 2018, Cuyo quickly embraced realism tattooing, mastering intricate detail and precision.

His artistic style uniquely blends the vibrant, expressive qualities of pop art with the rich cultural symbolism of Japanese tattoos, reflecting both modern energy and traditional depth. Inspired by tattoo artist Quang Phan—who, interestingly, has no tattoos himself—Cuyo views tattooing as a powerful form of self-expression rather than merely bodily decoration. His philosophy encourages society to see tattoos as meaningful art that does not alter one’s heart or soul.

Throughout his career, Cuyo has faced challenges common to self-taught artists, including technical learning curves and building client trust.
